I wrote this essay as a sophomore, and it was one of the first serious academic papers that I had written outside of the physical sciences. During my career at the Lake Forest College, I majored in chemistry and physics, but I also enjoyed taking classes outside of my major because they were always excellent exercises in persuasive writing and critical thinking. It was great fun to consider science from a philosophical perspective, and the process of writing this paper was challenging because I had to make examples from the sciences accessible to everyone while maintaining the rigor of the argument. It was a lesson in communicating science to non-scientists and in bridging multiple fields of inquiry in the spirit of liberal arts.
