I wrote this paper in response to an assignment regarding the existence and validity of Mary Shelley’s Romanticism. For me, her Romanticism is absolutely undeniable, so I took the chance to use a critical lens – gender – to align Shelley with the most distinctly Romantic writers: William Wordsworth, Lord Byron, and John Keats. I have always been interested in Women’s representation in literature and saw this as an opportunity to advocate for one of my favorite novelists. The writing and research process did not only add to my understanding of Shelley’s work, but also furthered my appreciation for the useful tool that is the critical lens.
