As I sat down to write this paper, I knew it needed to be clear, interesting and topical because I wanted to illuminate the enjoyment I felt while reading the play. My professor told the class that The Winter's Tale is one of Shakespeare's lesser-appreciated works. I enjoyed my attempt to demonstrate the subtle genius of Shakespeare's mix of tragedy and comedy. My process was to understand the play and the language as if I were a critic of the time, as opposed to a young college student far removed from the character's world. I am most proud that I planned and stuck to a writing schedule that allowed me to read the play, draft, redraft, and edit my essay until I felt confident enough to submit the paper.
