Abstract

My project outlines the Jewish response to the American Civil Rights Movement in the latter half of the twentieth century. My goal is to understand the Jewish community’s reaction as a whole, as well as individual participation. I research primary documents such as speeches and interviews (e.g., Rabbi Joachim Prinz’s speech delivered at the August 1963 March on Washington). In addition, I utilize secondary sources that analyze the variety of Jewish participation or lack thereof. Lastly, I seek evidence of the overall impact of Jewish involvement, as well as the black perspective of the Jewish community.
