Abstract

The uniqueness of eighteenth-century Protestant dissenting thought on reason and passion has been noted by scholars like Isabel Rivers. The theological roots of such views have not been studied, however. This work explores the theology behind the ontology of the written works of English dissenting pastor Isaac Watts. The emerging view is of a God who defines the identity of all reality through creation and the atonement to work in harmonious relationship to his image. The practical outworking of this view appears in Watts’s Christo-centric hymns and sermons.
