Abstract

This is a presentation about my three months' volunteer experience in India (summer 2012). I worked for a nongovernmental organization (NGO), Ashraya Initiative for Children, which serves as a home for street kids and run various community outreach projects located in Pune. I worked on the Education Outreach and Residential Program located in the Yerwada slum. Through my immersion experience, I encountered life in both simple rural communities and urban expansion. I explored the nature of NGOs, encountered the genuine goodness of underprivileged children, social injustices, and cultural contrasts. I was almost mugged and witnessed a bomb attack. Through these varied experiences, I developed a deeper understanding of myself and strengthened my beliefs in the idea and practice of service to others.
