Abstract

My research experience in the Costa Rica program demonstrates how conducting research in a different culture also fosters cultural awareness and personal growth. My psychological research project focused on levels of happiness and satisfaction in San Ramon, Costa Rica. Questionnaires measuring happiness levels were distributed to 197 participants of all ages. Results showed that participants valued health and family communication over material possessions and wealth. These results supported my hypothesis and helped me connect certain aspects of Costa Rican culture to my study. Consequently, I changed my career path to studying education systems and cross-cultural work, reassessing my perspective on human relationships and gender roles in other countries.
