Abstract

Beltane is a religious holiday observed annually on May 1 within Paganism, an Earth-based religion. With roots in historic Celtic lore, celebrations of this springtime festival are steeped in tradition and symbolism. This is a celebration of the vitality of the Earth; the cycle of the seasons is in balance, summer’s harvest is soon to arrive, and fertility is in the air during this time. The role of food during Beltane is one of importance and can be highlighted by looking at the agricultural, historical, and contemporary practices of neopagans.
