Abstract

My research is on the daily life of the Soviet gulags during the time of Joseph Stalin. I examine the background of the GULAGs by first looking at the Tsarist and Soviet prisons then at the GULAG system itself. I compare and contrast the different camps and the people in them relying heavily on memoirs written by GULAG survivors. I concentrate on social status inside the camps, how these social groups impacted the individual, and use the small details of daily life to show what affected prisoners' overall experience and how they viewed the world around them.
