Abstract

Expectations for argument, authority, voice, and use of evidence vary from country to country. These variations parallel differences in belief systems about how knowledge is constructed, who should be considered “knowledgeable,” and even how writing is related to learning processes. Writing Center tutors find themselves discussing these topics in the context of advising students on grammar, organization, and critical reading processes. Join Writing Center tutors as they share what they have learned about the American academic essay and college learning experience from working with writers from around the world at Lake Forest College. They hope to provoke lively discussion.
