"Amped on Hell": Representations of the Suburban Gothic in Serial Television

Student Presenter(s) and Advisor

Simone Perry, Lake Forest CollegeFollow

Location

Meyer Auditorium

Abstract

Twin Peaks is the seminal television program in the Suburban Gothic genre, presenting suburban living as truly eerie; a smooth rock that hides all of the rot beneath it. Buffy the Vampire Slayer confronts similar issues in the context of the American teenager. Today, American Horror Story continues this legacy, using horrific stories as metaphors for the evil that exists in the Suburbs--a place essentially created to escape the fears associated with city life. Through the use of the Suburban Gothic, these shows offer a social commentary about the ignorance of whole communities to the dangers that exist within them.
