One Earth, One God: Voiceovers And Celestial Images Of Nature In Terrence Malick’s The Thin Red Line

Student Presenter(s) and Advisor

Keemia Soheil, Lake Forest CollegeFollow

Location

Abstract

I will consider the presence of God in Terrence Malick’s The Thin Red Line. Central to the presentation is my study of Malick’s use of voiceovers and nature shots. The film’s wondrous shots of nature work dynamically with its ensemble cast’s voiceovers; both deliver the film’s thematic patterns on the relationship between humans, nature and God. Furthermore, Malick combines these two devices to parallel humanity to nature, which in turn provokes the contemplation of God’s omnipotence. Ultimately, the film asks if God’s essence is incorruptible, even amongst the savagery of war; can His light reach even the most depraved fields of existence?
