Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry in Ionic Liquids

Abstract

The development of science and technology is contingent upon the synthesis of new materials coupled to the development of new experimental methods. At this frontier the Cody lab uses room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) to prepare new materials from their respective elements. Initially, progress was slow as the incorporation of RTILs into synthesis was novel in synthetic inorganic chemistry. However with time and a greater understanding of the chemistry at play, the Cody lab has recently discovered several new molecular solids, such as [EMIM]3[CrIII(P3S9)2], (EMIM = 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium) demonstrating the versatility of RTILs for use in exploratory synthesis.
