Abstract

Today, consumers must constantly adapt to new forms of media technology and content. While the majority of mass mediated technology has already undergone digitization, one field that is just beginning to change is book publishing. Through semiotic analysis of ereader ads and participant observations of bookstores, I examine the shift in the way that reading culture is being symbolically constructed in modern consumer culture, especially in relation to technology. I conclude that the reading cultures of print books and ebooks are not mutually exclusive, which is also reflected in the way ebooks are being integrated into modern consumer culture.
