Abstract

The notion that college is only a period of academic growth is imperfect; the striking truth is that college students go through phases of preparation for social independence. Data collected from Lake Forest College strongly suggests that students experience three changes related to family communication. How students talk to their families consists of trends about personal health, the well being of family members, and romantic relationships. Through surveys and interviews, what students' share with their family reveals a transition to being equal to their parents; thus, during college students prepare to start their own families.
