The Great Depression as seen through the Lens of a World Using Electronic Currency

Jimmy Cusan, Lake Forest College

Abstract

This paper combines my research on electronic (fiat) currency, the Great Depression and the Great Recession. I assess monetary policy in aftermath of the United State's greatest periods of economic downturn through the lens of a world using electronic currency. Monetary policy faces limitations when faced with the problem of a zero lower bound on nominal interest rates. Electronic fiat currency offers a solution to this problem, and I will contrast monetary policy of the past with an electronic currency world.
