Ionothermal Synthesis of New Thiophosphates

Abstract

Three new metal thiophosphate anions, [CoS4(Co(P3S8)2)2]4–, [Cr(P3S9)2]3–, and [Mn(P2S8)2]2–, have been isolated as single crystal salts from ionothermal reaction of the elements. The first compound is structurally unique from known thiophosphate anions, while the others are structurally similar to the known nickel-containing ions [Ni(P3S9)2]4– and [Ni(P2S8)2]2–, respectively, previously made in our lab. These new compounds demonstrate that additional metals can be used in this synthetic method and open up future possibilities for further studies and potential applications.
