Abstract

From the time the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was founded, there has been heated debate over the level of success that IMF programs have in increasing economic growth. The IMF has been criticized for imposing harsh economic conditions on loan recipient countries, and scholars have argued that IMF participation hinders growth in per capita GDP and other measures of economic growth. My preliminary results suggest that enrollment in IMF programs has a positive effect on per capita GDP growth. Using a difference in differences approach I explore to what extent recipient countries may have experienced a different growth path in the counterfactual situation.
