Abstract

At Lake Forest College every student enrolls in a first-year studies course. There are approximately 25 classes and about 400 first-year students. The students rank the classes and then the administration places the students into courses based on various factors such as class size or avoiding placing athletes in courses with field trips. We developed a computer program for the College that performs the student placement while optimizing student preference subject to the many constraints.
