Abstract

Beyond Words is a project that combines visual art and linguistics. I asked seven multilingual students to think of a word or a saying that is not directly translatable to English. Their phrase/word is examined using the Sapir-Whorf theory of language in which language shapes thought. After explaining the concept in English, the students were asked to draw an image that communicates the meaning of the word or a saying. For each drawing, I thought of a corresponding word or a saying in my native tongue Finnish. Inspired by the Rider Waite Tarot card pack, I then transformed the concepts into into a series of illustrations. This project investigates the extent to which visual language can be used to convey concepts tied to a specific culture. The question is – can semiotic systems be international? In addition to the illustrations, the project involves a video and the participants' original drawings.
