Two abstract notions, resonance and relevance, most accurately describe the profound and formative influence that Joseph Brodsky has exerted upon my person and persona in recent times. It was a blustery New Hampshire day that I first encountered this somewhat obscure figure. Partaking in a Russian language course at Dartmouth College, I marveled at the impartation, imputation, and inflection of his words and the voice with which he presented them, a sort of rhythmic cacophony of collected musings. Captivated by this video portrayal (Brodsky had died nine months prior), I was immediately drawn to discover more about him. Having poured over countless verses since then, it wasn't until this past year that I deliberated on his prose works, collected essays as poetic as they are didactic.
