Presentation Title

The Cost of Sheltering College Students from Financial Responsibility

Location

Skybox

Abstract

Being financially stable and knowing when and how to spend money are huge factors in becoming independent and making the transition into adulthood. In a study designed to explore the financial literacy of Lake Forest College students, I discovered a startling lack of awareness of post-college costs. While students were able to articulate the need to make money and how college focused on that aspect of finances, most were unable to anticipate how to manage their adult spending. This presentation considers how society and parents shelter children from financial responsibility, creating dependence without a mechanism to get out of it.
