Studies Toward the Total Synthesis of Chaetoxanthone B

Abstract

The goal of this project is to synthesize Chaetoxanthone B, a naturally occurring anti-malarial compound. This molecule was isolated from Chaetomium sp., a marine fungus harvested from an algae originating from Santorini, Greece. Currently, we are developing a suitable synthetic pathway to make Chaetoxanthone B starting from simple commercially available compounds because it is difficult to obtain this metabolite from the natural source. Access to larger quantities of this natural product would allow for further exploration of the anti-malarial activity and allow for the preparation of non-natural synthetic derivatives.
