Abstract

Three recently discovered metal thiophosphate anions, [Cr(P₃S₉)₂]³-, [Mn(P₂S⁸)₂]²-, and [CoS₄(Co(P₃S₈)₂)₂]⁴- have been isolated as single crystals salts from ionothermal reaction of the elements. Crystals of the [Cr(P₃S₉)₂]³- thiophosphate were characterized by both EDX and IR spectroscopies, and the air sensitive [Mn(P₂S⁸)₂]²- crystals were analyzed by IR. The complete structure of [CoS₄(Co(P₃S₈)₂)₂]⁴- was solved from the single-crystals XRD data and submitted to the CCDC as structure number 1428601. Potential new avenues of exploration of ionothermal synthesis of new metal thiophosphates were opened by the preparation and H-NMR characterization of two ILs synthesized in the lab: [PMIM][BF₄] (PMIM = 1-propyl-3-methylimidzaolium) and [BMIM][BF₄] (BMIM = 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium).
